Clean out and organize your Spice cabinet with me. Cleaning and organizing your spice cabinet is something that we should aim to do once a year. As the weather starts to warm up and grilling season soon approaches, you want to make sure all your spices and herbs are nice and fresh.
I am also sharing all the items I use to organize our spice cabinet.
Being someone who loves to cook, our spice cabinet gets lots of love. I am always buying more spices and creating my own blends as well. As you know we are a Vegetarian Mexican-Indian household so spices are “the meat and bones” of all our dishes, so trust me we had a ton of spices.
Clean out and Organize Your Spice Cabinet
Step 1
Go through all your shelves and take everything out. You want to start with a clear canvas. I took all my jars and bins out.
Step 2
Go through each item. If it is expired throw it out. I have refillable glass spice containers that I bought at IKEA. If you have containers to refill, make sure to clear out the old spices, especially if you know you haven’t touched them in a while.
I ended up throwing away 6-year-old sage, parsley, and ground rosemary herbs that I had never touched. It was kind of gross.
Step 3
If you have empty glass jars and new spices add them to their new jars.
Step 4
Label them. I use the dymo label maker. They aren’t super aesthetic and cute, but they work for my kitchen.
Step 5
Clean out the drawer or shelf. Make sure to use a wet rag with disinfectant spray to ensure your surface is clean.
Step 6
Organizing time. This is where I like to think I outdo myself. I have several things that help keep my cabinet organized. I have a 3 tiered expandable spice rack, cabinet size plastic bins, and one Lazy susan.
All my spices go on the lowest shelf so that I can grab them easily. On the second shelf, I add the lazy susan. On that lazy susan, I add oils or spices that I grab often as well as any extracts. We use vanilla extract on our oatmeal daily so it’s in an easy grab location.
All of my glass salsas I like to put in a bin and all my other spices that are refillable containers I keep in a different bin. I also add any baking goods to the bins.
All of my extra spice containers I keep on the top shelf. If I ever need to grab anything from the top shelf I always have my step stool in our pantry.
This is how to clean out and organize your spice cabinet. You will feel so much better after having it done and you’ll also feel more inspired to cook, I know I did. Tell me, what are the essential spices you always keep in your kitchen?
