Today, I am sharing how to make cafe de la olla atole. If you know what atole is, you know it’s delicious.
What is atole?
I mentioned this before, but this beverage is a warm drink often made with milk or water and thickened with cornstarch. Typically this is made during colder months, but you can make it year-round if you’d like.
Cafe De La Olla Atole
Ingredients
- Milk or Water
- Brown sugar or piloncillo
- cinnamon stick
- Nescafe
- Cornstarch
Instructions
Step 1
Set the stovetop to a low medium heat level. Pour milk into the pot and add the cinnamon stick.
Step 2
Add Instant Nescafe to taste, I added 1 spoon because I don’t drink too much coffee. Along with the Nescafe add brown sugar or the sweetener you prefer. Stir with a whisk occasionally.
Step 3
In a different bowl, add 2 tsp of corn starch and pour a splash of cold milk. Stir with a fork until it has no clumps.
Step 4
Slowly pour the cornstarch and mixture into the pot while stirring until it becomes thickened.
Step 5
You can take the cinnamon stick out if you’d like, I keep mine in. Pour into your mug and enjoy.
How to Serve
Atole is most often served with either pan dulce or tamales. Pan dulce is a sweet bread, there are several types such as conchas, cuernos, empanadas, and many more. They all have flour, butter, and sugar. Tamales are steamed corn dough wrapped in a corn husk and filled with different types of meat and sauces. They also make veggie tamales our favorite tamal is poblano peppers with cheese- check out the recipe here!
I remember drinking this while eating tamales every Sunday after church in Mexico, the most delicious treat and a wonderful memory!
